Identify the notice
Check the sender, tax year, amounts and reasons. An irregularity notice, a payment demand and a tax assessment have different purposes and rules.
Compare the same period
Collect the return, filing receipt, payments and earlier replies. Ask an intermediary for messages received for you. A payment for another year may not explain the difference.
An imagined example
A payment has not been matched to the right return. Its receipt may help, but first compare the tax code, period and amount before deciding the demand is wrong.
Decide after checking
Discuss assistance or correction if figures differ. If money is due, check payment methods and conditions. Deadlines or reductions described for another notice may not apply.
Protect the file
Keep the complete notice and delivery evidence. Avoid suspicious links in unexpected messages; reach tax services through the official website. Ask promptly which deadlines apply.
