Understand every item

Identify the creditor, reason, period, amounts and earlier documents mentioned. Different items may have different origins and rules.

Reconstruct the history

Gather the demand, delivery evidence, earlier notices, payments, cancellations and court decisions. Ask the relevant offices for missing records. Not finding a notice in your files does not prove it was never served.

Separate the possible routes

Payment, instalments, cancellation, suspension and appeal have different conditions and effects. An enquiry to an office does not automatically suspend collection. Check consequences first.

An imagined example

A receipt appears to cover the same debt. Compare its reference, period and creditor. A similar amount alone does not show that this demand was paid.

Check deadlines carefully

Limitation and other statutory time limits depend on the type of debt and intervening acts. Counting years from the first demand is not enough. Give the professional the full timeline and ask immediately which dates matter.
